Indiranee Batumalai is the retired State Matron of the Selangor State Health Department. A devoted wife and proud mother of two daughters, she has built a distinguished career in nursing, marked by progressive leadership, academic excellence, and a lifelong commitment to healthcare improvement. Her academic qualifications include: • Master of Nursing Science (Distinction) – University of Malaya, 2012 • Bachelor of Nursing Science (Hons), Major in Administration – University of Malaya, 2005 • Post Basic Midwifery Part 1 – School of Midwifery, Malacca, 1995 • Post Basic Cardiac Care Nursing (Distinction) – School of Post Basic, Kuala Lumpur, 1993 Matron Indiranee began her nursing journey in 1988 as a Staff Nurse at the Ministry of Defense Hospital. In 1998, she was promoted to Nursing Sister. In 2008, she transferred to the Ministry of Health and served as Clinical Matron at Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bahru. Her leadership journey continued as Area Matron (Management) at Hospital Ampang (2012–2014), followed by a promotion to Chief Matron at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh. In 2015, she was appointed Deputy Chief Matron at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, and in August 2017, she assumed the prestigious role of State Matron for Selangor. Throughout her career, Matron Indiranee has gone beyond administrative duties to become an active trainer, facilitator, and speaker at both national and international levels. Her notable presentations include: • Nursing Policies and Quality Nursing Practice – Orientation Programs for Nurses (2017–2023) • Nursing Leadership – Various organizations (2014–2023) • Hospital Nursing Policies – Hospital Kuala Lumpur (2015–2017) • Assessment of Nursing Quality in Reality-Based Training – MnM Conference, UK, organized by Asia Pacific Healthcare Simulation Conference (2015) • Negligence Among Nurses – Selangor, organized by the Nursing Division, MOH (2015) An advocate for research, Indiranee has presented several papers at professional conferences and collaborated with the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) on focus group-based studies. Her contributions extend to academic and policy development, including: • Leading the development of the Wound Care Post Basic Curriculum Module for MOH • Heading a team in preparing a module on nursing report writing for MOH • Serving as Editor for Nursing Practice Guidelines and Nursing Standards (MSQH), and Nursing Policies (MOH) • Chairing and serving on numerous organizing committees for professional programs • Mentored nurses in conducting and editing research papers For her outstanding service, she has been honored with: • Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang (Excellence in Service Award) • Pingat Perkhidmatan Cemerlang, awarded by the Sultan of Selangor Matron Indiranee Batumalai’s illustrious career and enduring contributions to the nursing profession continue to inspire.
